Greetings Fellow Rotarians,

I hope you are all doing well.  With the Stay-at-Home order extended this week it’s unfortunate that we wouldn’t be able to meet at the Hyatt for our club luncheon fellowship.  However, it’s comforting to know that we have ZOOM plus our Northern Star newsletter to keep us “connected with one another”.

Our annual 9/11 Wreath Laying Ceremony will be commemorated this year, but not in the traditional manner.  Amid the COVID-19 pandemic Sec/PADG Joe is coordinating with the Peace Memorial Committee and KUAM so that the event shifts from an in-person to a virtual event.  While we may not be able to stand side by side this September RCNG will not be deterred because of PCOR1.  Instead we will push forward as a sign of unity with all the cities throughout the US mainland to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on 9/11, the survivors of that tragic day and to honor veterans, military and first responders who dedicate their lives to serving others.

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month for Rotary.  Aside from distributing dictionaries to the 3rd graders in the public schools we will reach out to the Elementary Schools in the northern district to determine how RCNG can address literacy in their school community.

Next club service project, slated initially for Sept. 19, the annual islandwide “Coastal Cleanup” has been cancelled due to the Governor’s extension of the public health emergency mandate.  In lieu of an actual in-person service project our club will be looking at possibly donating to certain non-profit organizations as well as to the homeless program.  Please don’t hesitate to contact any one of the board members if you have other suggestions in mind.

RCNG Northern Star eBulletin is issued every 1st and 2nd Wednesdays of the month.  Please contact Sec. Joe if you would like to submit an article for our newsletter.

As we commemorate the 19th anniversary of  9/11 I invite each of you to take a moment to reflect on how each of us are encouraging and fostering the 4th Object of Rotary, namely,
“The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Yours in Rotary,
P. Hermie
